In the world of anabolic steroids, Winstrol is one of the most popular compounds of all time. Its best-known brand name is Winstrol. Winstrol is one of the few steroids that enjoys equal recognition across nearly all competitive sports, as its properties are effective in many different ways. Developed by Sterling-Winthrop Laboratories, Winstrol is an FDA-approved drug typically used for the medical treatment of anemia and severe edema, and in some cases, it can even be used as part of a hormone replacement therapy (HRT) regimen—though such uses are rare. Since this steroid does have some valid medical applications, you’ll see it in the competitive bodybuilding arena, but that may not be its most common use.
Winstrol is one of the most popular steroids among gym enthusiasts, who typically aim simply to achieve a more aesthetically pleasing physique—one characterized by well-defined, strong muscles without excessive bulk, a look that is generally more appealing to the average person. While gym enthusiasts make up a large proportion of Winstrol users, the steroid is also common in competitive sports, including soccer, baseball, and even track and field. In fact, the use of Winstrol is particularly widespread in track and field. Although Winstrol isn’t well-suited for rapid muscle gain, its applications are otherwise quite diverse. Let’s take a closer look at it below.
Winstrol, a derivative of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), is an oral anabolic steroid derived from ester-free DHT that is 17-alpha-alkylated (17-aa). Winstrol is also available in injectable form, most notably under the brand name Winstrol Depot, but today we will focus solely on the oral tablets. As a DHT anabolic steroid, Winstrol does not aromatize (it does not convert to estrogen), which is a highly desirable trait; it also means that any muscle tissue you gain is pure muscle, free of water and fat. In terms of its properties, Winstrol possesses high anabolic potential—higher than many steroids—but very low androgenic levels. Winstrol’s anabolic potential greatly increases nitrogen retention and significantly enhances protein synthesis, which is key to improving athletic performance.
Aside from these important factors, it has another particularly interesting characteristic. When it comes to protein synthesis, SHBG levels are especially important—a trait shared by Winstrol and Proviron, another DHT-based anabolic steroid. Like Proviron, Winstrol can significantly lower SHBG. Your first question might be: Why is this important? Because as SHBG decreases, your body can bind more testosterone, and your free testosterone levels will increase. Furthermore, the lower the SHBG, the more effective the other anabolic steroids you’re using will be; they are no longer restricted and can remain active with greater efficiency. Therefore, when using Winstrol, it should be used in combination with other steroids.
Like most oral anabolic steroids, Winstrol is in the 17-aa form, meaning it has undergone a modification at the 17th carbon atom. It is precisely this modification that allows the hormone to function. This enables it to survive after oral ingestion; without the 17-aa modification, the hormone’s structure would be largely destroyed. For example, oral methenolone acetate (Primobolan Acetate) is not a 17-aa steroid; consequently, its effects are much weaker than those of the injectable methenolone (Primobolan Depot). To achieve the same results, you would need to use a higher dose of methenolone acetate. As a 17-aa steroid, Winstrol is able to survive passage through the liver without being broken down; unfortunately, however, this modification also makes it toxic to the liver. Users of Winstrol will find that their liver transaminase levels rise significantly during use, so it is necessary to take liver-protecting medications to mitigate these side effects.
Like most oral anabolic steroids, Winstrol has a very short half-life. The half-life of this steroid is only about 9 hours. Because of Winstrol’s short half-life, frequent dosing is required. Oral Winstrol must be taken daily; for lower-dose Winstrol formulations, we strongly recommend splitting the daily dose into two equal portions and taking them in the morning and afternoon to maximize effectiveness.
Benefits of Winstrol:
When discussing anabolic steroids, “cutting” (fat loss and weight loss) and “bulking” (weight gain and muscle mass gain) are the two most common goals, but this distinction isn’t entirely accurate. While most anabolic steroids serve a primary purpose suited to a specific goal, many also possess secondary characteristics that are often well-suited to another purpose. In some cases, such as with testosterone and Clenbuterol, they can be said to be well-suited for either type of cycle. However, Winstrol is somewhat of an exception, as it does not actually aid in gaining weight or muscle mass; rather, it is a steroid that is more effective for fat loss and weight reduction. It can significantly enhance your athletic performance and is extremely helpful for bodybuilding competition preparation, so this is where its greatest value lies in the bodybuilding world.
Athletes using Winstrol will quickly notice an increase in strength; their speed will improve, and they’ll gain greater explosiveness; their overall athletic performance will be enhanced, and if you’re a specialist in a particular sport, it can rapidly improve your competition results. Some lean muscle mass may be gained during use, but the amount won’t be very noticeable. Oral Winstrol also offers another advantage for athletes subject to drug testing: its detection window is only three weeks. This means an athlete can use Winstrol as long as they stop taking it at least three weeks before a test.
Winstrol also delivers incredible results for stage bodybuilders; it is one of the few steroids that can make your muscles look firmer and leaner. It can also significantly enhance vascularity, but you must first reduce your body fat to a sufficiently low level to truly see noticeable effects. Winstrol will not firm up an obese physique; to achieve the maximum benefits of Winstrol, you need to maintain a body fat percentage in the single digits.
Side Effects of Winstrol:
As mentioned earlier, Winstrol is one of the steroids that can be toxic to the liver; even the injectable version may be toxic to the liver. The liver is one of the body’s most important organs, and it has an excellent ability to heal and regenerate. With this in mind, using Winstrol responsibly can help you achieve the best results while staying healthy. This means you should not take Winstrol for more than 6–8 weeks at a time. If you’re truly concerned about this, avoid other behaviors that are toxic to the liver—such as drinking alcohol—while using Winstrol. Although liver transaminase levels may rise while Winstrol is active, the liver repairs itself easily, and these levels will return to normal shortly after discontinuing use.
So just how toxic is Winstrol to the liver? Its toxicity is moderate among oral steroids, lower than that of daily alcohol consumption or daily use of prescription medications.
Although liver toxicity is the most common side effect, it is not the most severe when considering Winstrol’s impact on cholesterol. Winstrol is known for increasing LDL cholesterol and lowering HDL cholesterol. The severity of these side effects depends to some extent on the dosage, but in reality, individual sensitivity plays a greater role. Therefore, it is strongly recommended that people taking Winstrol maintain a healthy, low-cholesterol diet rich in omega fatty acids. Fish oil and eggs are good choices.
Is Winstrol Suitable for Women?
Due to the nature of anabolic steroids and the female physiology, it is generally not recommended for women to use anabolic steroids. But let’s be clear: women can absolutely use anabolic steroids. However, women should be more selective in their choices, and Winstrol is a good option. For any woman considering the use of anabolic steroids, the biggest concern is developing masculine traits. However, in the case of Winstrol, this steroid can be used safely without causing any masculine characteristics. Like most men, women should limit their cycles to no more than 6 weeks, and their dosages should be kept at very low levels. If side effects occur during this period, the solution is simple: stop using it.
Winstrol Cycles and Dosage:
For female athletes, a daily dose of 10 mg of Winstrol will meet nearly all of her needs. Winstrol is typically available in 10 mg and 50 mg strengths. However, for most women, the starting dose should be 5 mg, though some women—especially those with a well-developed physique—may use a 20 mg dose for a short period. Although 20 mg can be used safely, you need to ensure you can tolerate the lower dose without experiencing side effects before increasing the dosage. Women taking more than 20 mg per day should be aware that virilization symptoms occur in nearly 100% of cases, so use with caution.
For male athletes, 50 mg per day is the standard dose and is generally well-tolerated. For some lighter athletes, 25 mg per day may be sufficient. Although a daily dose of 50 mg is adequate for most people, this dose can still be increased; the maximum dose the human body can tolerate is 100 mg per day, and this is typically reserved for competitive bodybuilders during the final stages of their competition cycle. For many bodybuilders, it is common to use Winstrol during the final 8 weeks of contest preparation—50 mg daily for the first 6 weeks, followed by 100 mg daily for the final 10–14 days to achieve the hardest possible physique; if you can combine it with Clenbuterol, you’ll find the results to be truly astonishing.
