Tirzepatide, another peptide hypoglycemic drug that was launched 3 years ago and entered China 2 years ago, also has a strong weight loss effect. A few days ago, the famous “New England Journal of Medicine” published a study that made a “head-to-head” comparison of tirzepatide and the recognized “magic drug” semaglutide in terms of weight loss effect. The results showed that tirpotide was 50% more effective than semaglutide in weight loss.
The study observed obese (that is, BMI ≥ 28) or overweight (BMI ≥ 24) patients. Overweight patients must also have at least one of hypertension, hyperlipidemia, sleep apnea, and cardiovascular disease. Please note that none of them had diabetes.
All patients were randomly divided into 2 groups, one group used tirzepatideand the other group used semaglutide. The medication was observed for 72 weeks. Statistics showed that the average weight loss in the tirpotide group was 20.2%, and the average weight loss in the semaglutide group was 13.7%. The weight loss effect of tirzepatide was nearly 50% higher than that of semaglutide.
In terms of reducing belly fat, the average waist circumference of the telpotide group decreased by 18.4cm, and the average waist circumference of the semaglutide group decreased by 13.0cm.
That is to say, in terms of heavier effects, the newly launched tirzepatide is stronger than semaglutide.
In terms of side effects, the two are similar, all of which are gastrointestinal symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, etc.
However, we cannot draw a conclusion about which one is better based on this study. A large number of studies have confirmed that in addition to lowering blood sugar and reducing weight, semaglutide also has heart and kidney protection effects, such as reducing the incidence and mortality of cardiovascular diseases, reducing urine protein, and delaying kidney damage, etc., while there is no evidence in this regard for tirzepatide. Which one is better or worse will have to be tested by time.
However, the competition between the two good products is a good thing for consumers.
